The island of Kea, or Tzia as it is also called, is a verdant island, with forests of Royal Oak, many herbs and other rare plants. It is also a natural habitat for many species of reptiles and birds. Due to the variety of flora and fauna a large part of the island is included in the NATURA 2000 environmental protection network. Kea is the Cycladic island closest to the mainland. There is a frequent ferry service to the island from the port of Lavrio and the crossing takes one hour. Lavrio is 30-40 min drive from Athens Airport. The main port, Korissia is where there are supermarkets, bakeries, banks, pharmacy, tavernas, cafes and other conveniences. Vourkari is a picturesque yachting harbour with the best waterfront fish restaurants on the island, small exclusive boutiques, cafes, bars etc.
